Firm partners Provide helpful info on ID theft

via local media

Identity theft and credit fraud continue to grow and take a heavy toll on U.S. consumers.  The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans are the victims of identity theft each year.  The latest research indicates that 8.3 million American adults, or 3.7 percent of all American adults, were victims of identity theft in 2005, and the numbers are believed to have continued to climb in 2006 and 2007.

Firm partners Alex Kurkin and Marc Brandes are on the front lines of helping Florida auto dealerships and other businesses to prevent ID theft, and local media outlets have turned to them for helpful information on the issue.  Brandes shared his insights on the topic in a live 30-minute interview on “Topical Currents,” WLRN-FM’s (National Public Radio) local daily public affairs show.  He answered questions from host Joseph Cooper and several callers about preventing ID theft as well as tips for victims to recover from it and restore their credit.

Kurkin was quoted extensively in a recent column in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel entitled “Identity theft growing; here’s how to fight it.”  He advises businesses in the column to take serious precautions to protect their customers’ credit applications, and he urges consumers to use shredders to destroy documents that contain their social security numbers and other information that can be used by identity thieves.
