The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans are the victims of identity theft each year. The latest research indicates that 8.3 million American adults, or 3.7 percent of all American adults, were victims of identity theft in 2005, and the numbers are believed to have continued to climb in 2006 and 2007.
